Tesla-built charging stations that can rev up an electric car's battery in less than an hour opened Monday in Chicago and Boston's city centers. These "supercharging stations" are intended to make electric cars easier for urban residents, who tend to be short on both time and space.

Conventional electric-car chargers fit inside a home garage, an amenity that most people living in cities do not have. Tesla said that its superchargers are more compact and that it will be easy to install them into public parking areas for drivers to use while on the go. Also, they fully charge each car battery in an average of 45 to 50 minutes.

"Supercharger stations in urban areas will be installed in convenient locations, including supermarkets, shopping centers and downtown districts, so it's easy for customers to charge their car in the time it takes to grocery shop or run errands," Tesla said in a blog post. "They also have the same pricing as our existing superchargers, which is far cheaper than the cost of gasoline."

Drivers using these stations get the first 1,000 miles' worth of electricity for free in any given year. They will pay small fees per kilowatt-hour for any miles above that, with fee amounts varying state by state.

Tesla has already set up 884 supercharging stations worldwide as of the end of June, according to a company earning statement. But the company announced that it plans to double the number of working supercharging stations by the end of the year, starting with these new sites in Boston and Chicago.
